GM’s fall felt across the nation
The Detroit News
a former GM chairman and president. “I had tears in my eyes yes sir” said Adelphe Dimitrios who has owned Party Pizza across the street from the GM assembly plant in Wilmington that will close next month. “We do a lot of business with them. I feel really sorry for other people who are losing their jobs. “And where am I going to go after 24 years?” Wilmington residents said they could read the looming trend in the industry but it was more difficult to anticipate the worldwide recession that hastened GM’s decline and has impacted all auto manufacturers. “We were hoping they would pick the plant as one they would idle until the economy turns around” said Jim Wolfe a native Detroiter who is president of the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce.

GM workers: Bankruptcy ‘bittersweet’
The Detroit News
today expressed a mix of resignation worry and optimism as their company headed into bankruptcy court. The sentiments were shared by white- and blue-collar workers alike from factories in Pontiac and rion Township to the company’s headquarters in Detroit. Worries abounded at the Pontiac East Assembly plant where workers were told they were among the plants to close under the bankruptcy plan. He was fielding calls and meeting with other union officials today. “We are being shut down ct.
Researcher helps develop new technique for modifying plant genes

“We made a slight change in the sequence of the plant’s own DNA rather than adding foreign DNA. ” New approachThe new approach has the potential to help scientists modify plants to produce food fuel and fiber sustainably while minimizing concerns about genetically modified organisms. For the study the researchers created a customized enzyme called a zinc finger nuclease to change single genes in tobacco plant cells. The altered cells were then cultured to produce mature plants that survived exposure to herbicides. “This is the first real advance in technology to genetically modify plants since foreign DNA was introduced into plant chromosomes in the early 1980s” Voytas said. “It could become a revolutionary tool for manipulating plant animal and human genomes. ” Zinc finger nucleasesZinc finger nucleases are engineered enzymes that bind to specific DNA sequences and introduce modifications at or near the binding site.
