The International Atomic Energy Agency or IAEA to which Iran is a member says it is committed to imparting a “culture of nuclear safety” for all member nuclear power operatorsAn Iran energy official says the Bushehr nuclear power plant will go online later this year producing half of its expected 1000 megawatt output. When that happens Iran will not be running Bushehr entirely on its own. Russia’s roleRussia’s state nuclear power entity ATMENERGPRM completed the plant after years of delays. It is now training the Iranian staff to run it.

The Tennessee Valley Authority is evaluating a potential site near the Clinch River in Roane County Tenn. for the reactor and is a industrial consultant for Babcock & Wilcox said Jack Bailey TVA’s vice president of nuclear generation development. TVA has not made any decisions about building a small reactor plant however Bailey added. is also advising the company on the design and licensing process but has not made any decisions about purchasing the mPower or examining any sites said Craig Lambert Exelon’s director of engineering of New Business Generation. NRC considerationThe mPower reactor is largely based on Generation III reactor technology that NRC is currently reviewing for certification which should make the small reactor’s licensing “conform to existing licensing protocol” and shorten the review time Mowry said. The company said it hopes to have a customer submit a combined construction and operating license for a small-scale plant by 2012 with construction beginning in 2015 Bethards said.

“The cost challenges we face are significant. Accordingly we must close some of our production locations” said Marty Thomas senior vice president of operations and engineering services for Rockwell (NYSE: RK). The Milwaukee-based manufacturer of industrial automation systems and controls plans to close the Iowa plant which has 163 workers by the end of 2010. Workers were notified Tuesday. Work and resources from the Georgia and Iowa plants will be shifted to existing Rockwell facilities in Wisconsin Iowa and Mexico. The plant closures will generate cost savings by consolidating operations according to Rockwell management. The work transfers will also create a simpler supply chain enabling better customer service the company said.
