Waste-to-energy plant plans move forward
Baltimore Sun
The counties have agreed to pay the disposal authority half of the preliminary planning costs which include engineering legal fees and financial advisory services. The estimated $450 million facility would serve the disposal needs of both counties and would provide energy to buildings at Aberdeen Proving Ground its nearest neighbor. n Monday the Baltimore County Council approved the maximum allocation of $375435 for the county’s share of the estimated preliminary costs. Initial plans call for the authority to construct own and operate the facility and assess operating costs to each county.
Menasha steam plant recommendation on the way

“I’m curious to see what the long-term solution is” said Dave Schmidt a retired planner who was raised in Menasha and moved away before returning in 2000. “Some way we’ve got to make that viable to help offset the massive debt. “riginally projected to cost $12. 8 million the conversion of the aging coal-fired power plant to a steam utility was burdened by questionable engineering and faulty projections by an Illinois consulting firm that later paid the city $860000 in an arbitration settlement. A hasty decision by utility officials to proceed without securing an important fourth industrial customer or putting the project out for bid led to project changes construction engineering and operational issues that caused the cost of the coal-fired plant to more than triple led to taxpayer subsidies totaling more than $2. 5 million the past four years and three downgrades to the city’s credit rating. The city’s credit rating has dropped from A1 to A3 with a negative outlook adding roughly 1 percent to 1.

The 31-year-old Dublin native loves a challenge whether it’s tackling a chemical-engineering problem in his day job at Genentech mastering the brave new world of the music business or crafting a perfect acoustic-pop song. “It’s like there’s a puzzle” Harrington says in his Irish brogue “and if the words and the music and the syllables and the timing and the space if it all comes together and works nicely there’s no better feeling than doing that. “Recorded on weekends and in stolen moments while helping Genentech get a new plant up and running near San Diego his new “Story” CD illustrates the charm and craft that have put Harrington — whose first name is pronounced wen — at the top of many observers’ lists of the Bay Area artists most likely to succeed. Although Harrington grew up around music and studied classical piano as a youngster he never pursued singing or songwriting until he came to America after graduating from University College Dublin with a degree in chemical engineering. “The way it works back home people just get together and have a singsong. If you go to a family party a family function you have to get up there and sing a song. If you don’t sing a song they’ll “.

HSC plan makes headway

He said some students may need remedial courses and summer classes could be a proactive approach to being ready to start the Chemical Engineering Technology curriculum in August. Curriculum detailsThe Chemical Engineering Technology curriculum designed for the first academic year will include topics such as chemical bonding and molecular structure basic organic chemistry of synthetic polymers and chemical plant operations. Among second-year topics would be chemical reactor design engineering problem-solving and plant operations economics. The second year also would include a chemical industry internship where the host industrial site may require background checks and drug screening. Reed said a new position for a Chemical Engineering Technology program director at Austin Peay has been created and will likely be filled this summer. He also expects two additional faculty members will be needed. “Early on we can likely cover with adjunct professors” Reed said.

yster Creek also notified the state Department of Environmental Protection. Engineering and environmental teams narrowed their investigation to a small area close to the storage tank to determine if it or pipes connected to it was the source of the tritiated water. Tritium is a low-level radiation emitter that is used commercially to make luminous dials and instruments and as a tracer for bio-chemical research. yster Creek site Vice President Tim Rausch said that at no time was there a threat to public or employee health and safety. The affected well was last tested during the week of March 10 and showed no detectable levels of tritium. The tritium discovery came a week after the U.
