Council to borrow money to fund wastewater plant

For nearly a year the town agreed to pursue the feasibility of a regional system specifically one proposed by Webster Investors that would reuse effluent resulting in zero overboard discharge into the bay. Webster is moving forward with a system that will be located at its Cheriton industrial park and service that town including Bayview and potentially other areas and towns but Cape Charles rejected the group’s proposal and opted to move forward with its own nearby system. Since then Cape Charles has also reduced the plant’s capacity from a planned 500000 gallons per day to its existing 250000 — something council and staff also debated agreed on disagreed on and then scaled back and changed the preliminary engineering and design once a final consensus was reached. “I’m concerned about how we as a small town can afford the cost of this wastewater project” said Linda Buskey. 5 million is a lot of money. Paying back any amount of it would fall on the people of Cape Charles” she said calling the town’s forecast of future sewer and water connections “wildly optimistic.
