That ti plant in your yard is a BIG industry
Naples Daily News FL -
If I need to plant 150 oaks in a few days or plant several hundred thousand dollars in shrubs over the course of a few weeks there are only a few companies to call. These large commercial landscapers normally are brought to a project by a landscape architect. Smaller landscapers tend to service smaller projects of course and would be involved with a homeowner in plant selection and design. DesignSomeone determines what plant goes in each spot. Landscape Architects tend to serve larger clients and projects often because the budget on smaller or residential jobs will not support design fees. Some landscapers have staff designers. These are called ‘design-build’ firms.

Dallas-Fort Worth companies push science engineering to students
Fort Worth Star Telegram TX -
At the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame in Fort Worth hundreds of kindergartners through fourth-graders were taking field trips from school. They worked with staff from the Museum of Science and History and Lockheed engineers designing and building paper roller coasters towers and other structures. Using construction paper tape and a table tennis ball Kendra Schmies an aeronautical engineer at Lockheed’s Fort Worth plant helped youngsters build the roller coasters that demonstrated the physics involved in changing the speed of a table tennis ball and having it arrive in a desired location. “The excitement they get when it works is amazing” said Schmies 26 who was hired by Lockheed four years ago out of hio State University. Schmies said a real goal for her was to try and interest more girls and minorities in science at a young age and urge them to pursue math and science courses. The key “is to hook them at an early age and get them in the science habit” Robbins said. Similar activities were under way across the Metroplex with companies like Raytheon Vought Aircraft Industries and BAE Systems lending employees to the effort to recruit the next generation of skilled engineers for the aviation aerospace and other industries.

HEALTH PTINS Technology seen as boost to agriculture
Honolulu Star-Bulletin HI -
Q: What is genetic engineering?A: Genetic engineering or GE is a fast-track way to develop plants with specific desired characteristics. Since the beginning of agriculture farmers have been selecting plants with desired traits and cross-breeding them with similar varieties to develop new plants with properties never before found in nature. This has been somewhat of a shotgun approach because traditional cross-breeding involves mixing thousands of genes in one plant with thousands of genes in another. Consequently failure to obtain the desired traits is much more common than success. GE allows plant breeders to greatly shorten the time it takes to develop new varieties with desired characteristics. ne of Ronald’s projects involved the development of a rice variety that could survive heavy flooding. This was accomplished by finding a specific gene in an old rice variety that could survive for two weeks under water but had a low yield.
