Hearts&Minds along with many other food producers that use peanuts in their products has been cleared in the rash of salmonella cases that have sickened more than 500 people in 43 states and resulted in at least eight deaths. The food poisoning has been traced to Peanut Corporation of America. Food and Drug Administration officials said this week that PCA continued to ship peanut butter and peanut paste despite detecting salmonella at least a dozen times in testing done at its Georgia plant during 2007 and 2008. Members of Congress and state officials Wednesday called for a federal probe into possible criminal wrongdoing the Associated Press reported. The American Peanut Council’s growing list of manufacturers whose peanut butter and other foods containing peanuts have been deemed safe numbered almost 70 as of Wednesday afternoon. In addition to Hearts&Minds two other corporate entities with Naperville ties received the all-clear: ConAgra producer of Peter Pan peanut butter which has headquarters on Diehl Road; and Northfield-based Kraft Foods which manufactures Triscuit crackers in its plant on gden Avenue. The “not affected by FDA recall” list can be found at www.

Uncertainty remains about water plant
Craig Daily Press C
23 meeting between city staff and Tetra Tech water plant operators ? who are city employees ? requested Earley measure water levels throughout the plant and compare them to the levels Tetra Tech used to design the plant system. Earley found that the engineering firm based its design on water levels that are lower than what exists which could explain why the plant?s raw water pumps aren?t working right. Raw water pumps move water taken directly from the Yampa River into the plant?s treatment cycle. River water is stored in an area underneath the pumps which then move it upward into a nearby treatment station. If the water level is high then the pumps don?t have to move it as far and don?t need to expend as much energy. The problem is the pumps installed at the water plant are designed to move water from a lower elevation.
