’s move into the clean 21st-century battery business is a big win for a place badly in need of one. Metro Detroit is likely to emerge from the process with the first battery pack assembly plant operated in the United States by any automaker. The region — possibly Warren according to a ranking official — could end up with the nation’s largest battery lab even as an advanced battery research facility is established at the University of Michigan. The state beset with the nation’s highest unemployment rate and an image as the epicenter of industrial decline could reap as many as 15000 jobs over the next five years from GM and suppliers the president of the Michigan Economic Development Corp. SHA Fines Arms Plant for Lead Exposure and Firing Range Hazards

January 13 2009SHA Fines Arms Plant for Lead Exposure and Firing Range Hazards SHA has proposed $115500 in fines against a Worcester Massachusetts gun manufacturing plant and testing facility. The citations and fines follow SHA inspections initiated in response to employee complaints and chiefly concern inadequate safeguards against employees’ overexposure to lead on the plant’s firing ranges and to being struck by rebounding fragments during test firing of weapons. Specifically SHA found that the plant did not perform the required quarterly monitoring to determine employees’ lead exposure levels during range-clearing operations and did not implement engineering controls to reduce those exposure levels. These conditions resulted in the issuance of two willful citations with $98000 in proposed penalties. SHA also issued the company seven serious citations with $17500 in fines for additional deficiencies in lead monitoring and controls lack of protective clothing not requiring lead-exposed employees to shower at the end of each work shift deficiencies in the plant’s respirator program and failing to adequately shield employees against being struck by rebounding bullet fragments during test-firing operations.
