Toxics battle in Merced neighborhood
San Francisco Chronicle USA
Alameda Briggs keeps a list – now up to about 20 – of neighbors she says are dead or dying from cancer. And Melissa Standish says no one will want to buy her land here in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley. These people are among 2200 residents of Merced’s Beachwood neighborhood who say a nearby cooling tower fabrication plant contaminated their drinking water and soil exposing them to cancer-causing chemicals. In a lawsuit filed in federal court in Fresno they claim that for decades after the contamination was discovered the plant’s corporate owners failed to alert area residents to the health risk they faced while continuing to discharge dangerous chemicals into the soil and groundwater for part of that time. If successful the plaintiffs could win millions in damages. The companies whose subsidiary operated the plant over the years – the pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co. of New Jersey and Amsted Industries of Chicago – insist they did nothing wrong.

The company wanted to test a gasification chamber at the plant. Six years later having never gotten past phase two of testing FERCO went bankrupt leaving the city of Burlington $2 million in the hole. According to BG&E’s Web site Farris managed all facets of the design engineering and construction associated with the project. “We had a $400000 bond to cover removal of equipment” said plant manager John Irving “but because of the bankruptcy were weren’t able to collect any of that. Now we’re told it’ll cost $2 million to remove the equipment. “Aside from that the McNeil station has been a success. When it was built in 1984 it was the largest biomass plant in the world.

A large engineering firm has moved into this market — albeit a small move for now — because of the promises of BRAC. You’ll see in Business Observer below the announcement about Karen L. Weathers joining O’Brien & Gere which set up shop on Fort Bragg Road. It’s just her for now but that could change. “We see it as a huge opportunity” Weathers said.
