F&P plant to close 430 will lose jobs

Staff were informed at 10am the same time workers in other affected plants in Brisbane and California were also told. Michael Smith of Dunedin a father of two who has worked at the plant for eight years said he could not believe it when he heard the news on the radio. "We all sort of stopped work. We had no idea that this was going to happen" Mr Smith said. Fisher & Paykel vice-president of investor relations Paul Brockett of Auckland said: "It was a hard decision to make. It was the correct commercial decision for the company but we are aware people's lives are involved… Plants in Mosgiel Brisbane and California would be "shifted" to existing manufacturing sites in Thailand Italy and a recently purchased facility in Mexico. Financial benefits to the company were expected to be about $50 million a year. Mosgiel's engineering and design team made up of 100 people would be unaffected by the closure. Ongoing manufacturing cost rises particularly in New Zealand and Australia was the main reason for relocating production chief executive and managing director John Bongard of Auckland said. Dunedin Deputy Mayor and Mosgiel councillor Syd Brown said he was aware of the volatile market but believed the modern plant and the stable workforce would keep Fisher & Paykel in Mosgiel. A second Dunedin company also announced yesterday it was closing down. Knitwear manufacturing plant Tamahine Holdings Ltd said it would shut its doors on July 4 with about 50 staff being left jobless.

NET Framework Microsoft OfficeSharePoint Server and SQL Server aspenONE version 2006. 5 incorporates thefollowing Microsoft technologies:Microsoft Application VirtualizationWindows VistaMicrosoft Office ExcelOperations teams in more than 200 AspenTech customers areusing the aspenONE Engineering Suite integrated with Excel to optimizeperformance between engineering and operations. Using aspenONE a $20+ billioninternational integrated refining and marketing company created a plantperformance monitoring application that links the plant’s real-time databasewith an aspenONE engineering model of the plant to support operating decisions. Critical plant values and model results are displayed in Excel via a table anda graphical representation of the plant. As a result of these types ofintegrated solutions process manufacturers can shorten the time required torespond to performance issues better ensure production schedules are met andavoid customer delivery delays. The process of monitoring plant performance has been acumbersome manual activity and a struggle to do effectively. For processmanufacturers to truly optimize manufacturing performance they must be able tomonitor the plant continuously and deliver frequent guidance to a largeroperational staff that might not be familiar with modeling and simulation.

was founded by Ulrik Poulsen in 1982 manufacturing magnetic cores in Bridgeport Connecticut. In 1986 operations were expanded to include complete transformer design and manufacturing under the brand name Tortran. The Goertz audio wire brand has operated as a division of Alpha-Core and now all of Poulsen’s ventures are comfortably housed in an efficient 45000 square foot facility employing a full time staff of 30 and growing. All manufacturing warehousing quality control customer service accounting and sales are now centrally located in the Shelton plant all under the name Bridgeport Magnetics Group. “We purchased this building which is only twelve miles from our original plant in Bridgeportthe entire staff has remained through the relocation” stated Poulsen proudly. “Another attractive asset is that there is room for substantial expansion… In 1986 operations were expanded to include complete transformer design and manufacturing under the brand name Tortran. Oral Drug from African Plant may Be Useful in Chronic Pain
MedIndia – Apr 18, 2008
Peptides small proteins from cone snail venom have attracted recent attention from scientists as they can target receptors with a high degree of accuracy thus eliminating severe side effects. But peptides also degrade rapidly in the body. Professor Craik and Dr Clark have overcome this problem by engineering a circular peptide using a circular protein backbone discovered by Professor Craik and found in plants such as violets. ”Successful outcomes from this project will provide additional confirmation of the suitability of our molecule as a treatment for neuropathic pain” Clark said. ”Armed with these data we will be able to secure a commercial partner and develop this molecule into a tablet for sufferers of chronic pain” he added.
