Gut Reaction: Cow Stomach Holds Key To Turning Corn Into Biofuel
Science Daily – Science Daily (press release) – Apr 10, 2008
"The fact that we can take a gene that makes an enzyme in the stomach of a cow and put it into a plant cell means that we can convert what was junk before into biofuel" said Mariam Sticklen MSU professor of crop and soil science. She is presenting at the 235th national American Chemical Society meeting in New Orleans April 9. The work also is presented in the "Plant Genetic Engineering for Biofuel Production: Towards Affordable Cellulosic Ethanol" in the June edition of Nature Review Genetics. Cows with help from bacteria convert plant fibers called cellulose into energy but this is a big step for biofuel production. Traditionally in the commercial biofuel industry only the kernels of corn plants could be used to make ethanol but this new discovery will allow the entire corn plant to be used — so more fuel can be produced with less cost. Turning plant fibers into sugar requires three enzymes. The new variety of corn created for biofuel production called Spartan Corn III builds on Sticklen’s earlier corn versions by containing all three necessary enzymes.

Tomcar USA and EDAG Inc. recently took the wraps off the new 85000-square-foot contract production facility at EDAG’s North American headquarters in Auburn Hills. The plant can produce 10200 Tomcar vehicles per year when fully operational. “Nowadays it’s not trivial for automotive companies to move into Michigan and build out of here for the rest of the world but. I think this is the right decision for us” said Guy Poran Tomcar’s chairman and CEO… headquarters in Phoenix. But the ability to be closer to production and engineering operations and to leverage automotive industry resources have the company talking with state officials about establishing its global headquarters in the Detroit area Poran said. “This is happening in the coming months” he said. The vehicles which retail starting between $14000 and $15000 come in two-seater four-seater or mini-truck versions. They use four-cylinder gas or diesel engines and a continuously variable transmission similar to a snowmobile. They have applications in military mining security patrol farm and ranch recreation and tourism uses.

For instance very few programs exist at the junior high orhigh school level that introduce students to the wide arrayof potential careers in advanced manufacturing. Manyprograms that existed a decade ago have since been canceleddue to budget cuts. A more collaborative relationship between the manufacturingcommunity and educators would enlighten today’sstudents to the advances and challenging careeropportunities in manufacturing engineering and design.

Larry Johnson of View Engineering the firm that handles engineering services for the county told the authority on Wednesday that the amount of state grant money that will flow into the project is still unknown. The construction and the grant decisions are handled by different divisions within the DEQ he said. The upgrade to the plant located in Boyce would boost capacity from 50000 gallons per day to 99000 gallons per day Johnson said following the meeting. K? Lehmann Nielsen states ‘With this project we want to discover the central biochemical pathways involved in the production of starch and storage proteins and to identify the genes and genetic variants involved in the plants’ response to drought and diseases. CLC bio will develop the bioinformatics platform for all the Next Generation Sequencing analyses and will ultimately be the instrumental part in developing the thousand Digital Gene Expression profiles which will be used for developing the new super potato crop. ‘The Potato plant was chosen for this project as it produces twice the amount of energy per area compared to maize and wheat which makes it ideal for energy and food production. The project will draw on information gained from gene expressions of 40 different growth conditions for 15 selected cultivars which subsequently has been analyzed. A significant number of new or optimized bioinformatics algorithms will be developed in this project. They will all be bundled into a comprehensive bioinformatics package based on CLC bio’s present platform the workbench facilitating analysis of new sequencing technology data by research groups in companies and large corporations as well as public and private research institutions. The partners of this project are Institute of Food and Resource Economics and Department of Plant Biology LIFE Copenhagen University; Genetics and Biotechnology Aarhus University; Department of Biotechnology Chemistry and Environmental Engineering Aalborg University; Landbrugets Kartoffelfond (LKF); Andelskartoffelmelsfabrikken Vendsyssel (AKV); Kartoffelmelscentralen (KMC); and CLC bio… A significant number of new or optimized bioinformatics algorithms will be developed in this project.
