F&P to close Mosgiel dishwasher plant 430 jobs go | BUSINESS |…
TVNZ – Apr 17, 2008
“We have been faced for many years with an extremely unhelpfulexchange rate fuelled by high interest rates. Increasingly complexand costly compliance costs of manufacturing in our home countrieshave not assisted” he says. The union says Fisher & Paykel is closing the plant becauseit wants cheap labour. And the Engineering Printing andManufacturing Union denies it was consulted about the decision. National secretary Andrew Little says Fisher & Paykel haslost sight of its Kiwi origins and lost its heart and soul. “Most exporting manufacturers in New Zealand are struggling witha high US-NZ dollar but you expect companies the size of Fisher& Paykel to work hard to keep jobs here” says Little. “We have not been properly consulted on this decision.
FLSmidth gets 55 million euro Egyptian cement plant order
Forbes – Apr 17, 2008
The plant will be situated close to the city of Beni Seuf 120 kilometres south of Cairo. The order will contribute to FLSmidth’s earnings until the equipment has been shipped in mid-2010. The order is FLSmidth’s second cement plant order from Egypt in a month the group said adding that the plant will be built based on new licences issued by the Egyptian Ministry of Industry last year.
Making Waves
Jerusalem Post – Apr 17, 2008
There must be a way he figured to turn that hypnotic motion into something useful. It took Ovadia who pulls out forms detailing his 17 different patents more than a decade to develop his foggy notion into concrete reality. After completing his service in the Engineering Corps he worked in a plant manufacturing motors learning about pneumatics hydraulics and electricity. Eventually he struck upon the idea of a way to put the waves’ own energy to use. The theory behind wave energy exploitation goes back ages; bringing theory to practice often takes ages. As he brought SDE to life Ovadia built and tested eight different models of his system starting with one so small that it fit in his bathtub. He made each of the models larger until they required a shipping container full of water and eventually tested his current system in the Jaffa Port.

Genetic Engineering News – Genetic Engineering News (press release) – Apr 17, 2008
The latter wield their power over gene expression by literally cutting short the lives of mRNAs or tagging specific sequences in the genome for methylation. But before Lister could start to unravel the multiple layers of epigenetic regulation that control gene expression he had to pioneer new technologies that allowed him to look at genome-wide methylation at single-base resolution and to sequence the complete transcriptome within a reasonable timeframe. Collaborating scientists at the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology at the University of Western Australia in Perth developed a powerful web-based genome browser which played a crucial role in unlocking the information hidden in the massive datasets. Cells employ a whole army of enzymes that add methyl groups at specific sites maintain established patterns or remove undesirable methyl groups. When Lister and his colleagues compared normal cells with cells lacking different combination of enzymes they discovered that cells put a lot of effort in keeping certain areas of the genome methylation-free. On the flipside the Salk researchers found that when they knocked out a whole class of meth.
Cone snail African plant based oral drug may help treat chronic pain
The Cheers – Apr 17, 2008
Peptides small proteins from cone snail venom have attracted recent attention from scientists as they can target receptors with a high degree of accuracy thus eliminating severe side effects. But peptides also degrade rapidly in the body. Professor Craik and Dr Clark have overcome this problem by engineering a circular peptide using a circular protein backbone discovered by Professor Craik and found in plants such as violets. “Successful outcomes from this project will provide additional confirmation of the suitability of our molecule as a treatment for neuropathic pain” Clark said. “Armed with these data we will be able to secure a commercial partner and develop this molecule into a tablet for sufferers of chronic pain” he added. OUR OPINIONS: Keeping things honest
Atlanta Journal Constitution – Apr 17, 2008
mp3 –> OUR OPINIONS: Keeping things honest Cobb school board’s outside audit of politically connected contractor is proactive protective By. 16 billion building program has been managed the Cobb County School Board was wise to ask an outside auditor to dig deeper into the school district’s multiyear contract with The Facility Group. Other government agencies that routinely do business with the Smyrna-based company might want to consider the same action given how much of the company’s business is paid for by taxpayers. School board members county commissioners and other elected leaders should also look closely at campaign contributions the company and its employees have made to ensure that they have not inappropriately influenced the public’s business. The Facility Group handles everything from engineering and design to construction and management of major building programs. It is one of the most politically connected firms in the state competing for “privatized” contracts with government agencies including MARTA the Board of Regents Fulton and DeKalb counties and the city of Atlanta… The company also has a political action arm that over the last 15 months has contributed more than $21000 to state and local candidates. Its employees provided more than $19000 in statewide races and to local politicians. That practice has drawn heightened attention now that The Facility Group’s three top executives have been indicted in Mississippi for allegedly using campaign contributions to win a contract managing construction of a publicly financed meat-processing plant in the northern part of the state. A federal grand jury alleges that Facility Group chairman and CEO Roger Moultrie arranged a fund-raiser at his Smyrna home for a Mississippi state official and had company employees contribute to the official’s re-election campaign. The employees were later reimbursed for their contributions the indictment alleges. Mississippi is also suing the company for breach of contract and gross negligence for failure to complete construction of the plant. The state is asking for recovery of about $9 million for taxpayers and subcontractors.
