Engineering firm completes Camden economiser contract
Creamer Media's Engineering News – Apr 25, 2008
The process that increases opera- tional efficiency sees hot exhaust gases passed from the combustion process over the economiser tanks thereby trapping as much heat energy as possible before releasing the waste gases into the atmo- sphere. The trapped heat is used to increase the temperature of feedwater that is fed into the boiler to generate steam. The company was responsible for the project management design and supply. This included the complete redesign of the economisers considering factors such as changed cycle parameters. The company is the only local company capable of handling a project such as this from thermal calculation through to commissioning. The company developed a numerical model of the boiler which enabled the analysis of the steam generation process. This included the modelling and evaluation of the combustion characteristics of various coal types used to fire the boilers… The company offers a variety of services that cover the full spectrum of customer requirements. These services include the pro-ject management service and main- tenance rehabilitation and refurbishment of plant equipment and the provision of ancillary equipment within the utility power petrochemicals steel and general industrial plant industries. Steinmüller also offers assessment services covering overall plant condition increased plant efficiency modernisation services dynamic balancing under operating conditions spare parts management and the formulation of operational procedures and training. Bush Administration Releases Images to Bolster Its Claims About…
New York Times – Apr 25, 2008
The photographs taken inside the reactor before it was destroyed in an air raid on Sept. 6 clearly show the rods that control the heat in a nuclear reactor one of many close engineering similarities to a reactor halfway around the world where North Korea produced the fuel for its nuclear arsenal. While the photographs were not dated some taken on the ground seemed to go back to before 2002. But after a full day of briefing members of Congress two senior intelligence officials acknowledged that the evidence had left them with no more than “low confidence” that Syria was preparing to build a nuclear weapon. They said that there was no sign that Syria had built an operation to convert the spent fuel from the plant into weapons-grade plutonium but that they had told President Bush last year that they could think of no other explanation for the reactor. Among the photographs shown to members of Congress and reporters on Thursday was one of the manager of North Korea’s Yongbyon nuclear plant with the director of Syria’s nuclear agency… When asked about North Korea’s motivation for the project one of the senior intelligence officials said simply “Cash. ” He refused to say how much. The revelation of the plant’s existence is not new; The New York Times reported in mid-October that Israel had brought the United States evidence that the Syrian building was a partly constructed reactor. But no more than a handful of lawmakers had ever been briefed on the attack. A senior administration official briefing reporters with the help of the two senior intelligence officials said for the first time that the White House had extensive discussions with Israel before the airstrike in September. The official said the White House had raised the possibility of confronting Syria with a demand that it dismantle the reactor or face the possibility of an attack. But that idea apparently never gained traction with the Israelis or some in the administration and in the end the official said Israel cited satellite evidence to declare that the Syrian reactor constituted “an existential threat” to Israel because it might soon be ready for operation.

Timaru's Tom Flynn has launched his own company and joined forces with a major Christchurch firm who will also offer design and engineering services and to ensure appropriate back-up. Active Refrigeration South Canterbury Ltd has Mr Flynn his wife Sarah along with experienced design engineer Craig Duff and refrigeration expert Graham Green as directors. "Our locally owned and operated company will deliver performance to our clients driven by our direct ownership control and commitment. "We will offer a top level of service at extremely competitive rates due to our low overhead structure. "His motivation to start the company was the opportunity to become self employed. "It's a chance to really stand by your work and being your own boss is a better chance to meet customers' expectations… "Mr Flynn said refrigeration engineering is a competitive field but he is confident Active will grow to be a major player. A qualified engineer he has 24 years experience in the trade the last 14 specialising in industrial and marine work and decided there was room for another player in the market. "We tend to focus on coolstores and bigger industrial plant but are available for anything. "Joining him is qualified refrigeration engineer Mark Mackenzie and the pair will cover the South Canterbury area. Mr Flynn said the locally owned business angle supporting local industry and offering a 24-hour back-up service was the key. "The important thing is we want to focus on plant reliability safety and of course efficiency to help our customers' bottom line. ALCOA to demolish old South Plant administrative office building;…
Maryville Daily Times – Apr 25, 2008
The 66-year old building is no longer habitable and has been vacant since 2004. Plans are under way to rehabilitate the land and memorialize the importance of the building to the community’s history. Originally constructed in 1942 the building over the years housed departments such as plant management human resources engineering and Tapoco dispatch operations. Demolition is scheduled for June. “We know this building holds great sentimental value for employees retirees and the community” said Dale Huddleston environmental manager for Tennessee Operations. “Unfortunately conditions are such that the building cannot be saved. But our desire is to preserve those sentimental emotions about the bricks and mortar and transform them into other forms of remembrance of the building.

Since the announcement of PA4T the new polymer for high performance engineering thermoplastics in September 2007 numerous trials at selected customers have been completed. The initial results and customer feedback are very positive. With the opening of the market development plant access of customers to PA4T will be extended. PA4T developed by DSM Engineering Plastics is the first new polymer to be introduced in the new millennium. It answers market trends that call for miniaturization and the convergence of electronic devices. PA4T has an exciting and unique balance of properties also enabling automotive customers to bring metal replacement to the next level offering opportunities for better fuel efficiency and lower emissions. Nico Gerardu member of DSM’s Managing Board and responsible for the Performance Materials cluster commented: “The opening of the market development plant is another significant step forward in the development of PA4T.

"It’s trying to connect with the most cost-competitive suppliers up front. " Key to Samco’s success in securing a contract was its proposal to make single-segment chassis components which met the Tata team’s less-is-more philosophy. The proximity says Tata Motors spokesperson Debasis Ray will reduce inventory overhead and shipping costs hardly a trivial matter in a country with a patchy congested road system. Samco will fine tune the installation of their roll-formers on-site and the machines will then be operated by one of the Tata Motors’ suppliers. Innosight’s Johnson characterizes Tata-Ariba’s strategy as nothing less than profoundly disruptive. "What Tata has done is a classic business model innovation" he saysWhen the Nano starts rolling off the assembly line later this year it will sell for less than half the price of the next cheapest Indian passenger vehicle the Suzuki-owned Maruti 800 and for slightly more than a motorcycle.
