DCM Engg to invest Rs 200 cr in new plant in Chennai

“A piece of 50 acres of landhas been acquired in Chennai for setting up new facility which will manufactureengine blocks. It will be our second plant after Ropar in Punjab” DCMEngineering Chief Mentor Keshav Schdev told reporters here. The facility with proposedcapacity of 50000 tons units per annum would be operational within two yearsand cater domestic and export markets he said. The company is evaluating theoption of raising money through debt internal accruals and private equityplacement to fund this project he informed. Post expansion the company islooking to double the turnover to Rs 700 crore from Rs 350 crore at present. With the setting up of plantin Chennai the company hopes to cut down the input costs which are atpresent higher in Punjab.

The consulting engineering company Stemele Bosch Africa which focuses specifically on infrastructure projects and provides multi-disciplinary consulting engineering and project management services is actively involved in the civils mechanical electrical and instrumentation components for this project. “Phase one of the project will handle 6-million litres a day of sewage. However certain structures as well as a modular layout have been designed to handle the ultimate flow of 18-million litres a day” says SBA director Morrell Rosseau. “Construction of the treatment works comes as a great relief for the developers in the Ballito North area where this works was a prerequisite for further development to take place” he adds. The civils contract is valued at R234-million with estimated costs for the mechanical and electrical components expected to amount to a further R36-million.

The plant is situated north of Johannesburg and services the rapidly growing northern suburbs. Significant growth and increased densification with farmland and smallholdings being transformed into new housing developments and office parks in the area over the last ten years have put a strain on the system. ?This rapid growth puts enormous pressure on our existing infrastructure. We came up with strategies last year to address these challenges? says Johannesburg Water?s MD Gerald Dumas. The weather during the rainy season has added pressure… A further 50-million litres will be added by 2010 depending on whether the current pace of growth continues accelerates or slows. Phase three will complete unit five and will be undertaken when it is needed sometime before 2025. Group Five has established a joint venture (JV) with engineering and construction company NW Civil Contractors and Lesedi Civil Works & Technologies. The expansion project is trading as Northern Waste Water Construction JV. The contract which is due for completion in the second half of 2008 includes the demolition of 10 000 m3 of existing concrete structures. Besides this the contract includes the bulk earthworks the construction of inlet works tanks a sludge reactor flow dividers clarifiers thickeners and ancillary building work. The NWWTW collects and treats mainly domestic sewage from the areas of Alexandra Sandton Randburg the northern areas of Johannesburg Bedfordview and a portion of Edenvale and Germiston.
