Pollution of KB Feeder Canal
Pakistan Dawn – Feb 18, 2008
They ran into problems and are producing poor quality effluent. The main cause is the presence of toxic metals in the influent overloading of the system and poor operation and maintenance. Rational way forward: The grant of Rs500 million was enough to design and construct a proper rational and appropriate industrial wastewater treatment plant. This was not done and the KB Feeder continues to be polluted. In Karachi many people die a natural death at times without any tangible reason and apart from any specific health condition. The cause may be apprehended to be the use of unsafe and unwholesome drinking-water. The drinking water supplied in Karachi contains among other pollutants traces of DDT a deadly pesticide.

Minemakers on fertile ground with phosphate
The Australian – Feb 18, 2008
First production is targeted for 2010. Earlier this month Minemakers said it had secured drilling contracts to enable it to start a $600000 drill campaign in April. And last week it appointed Lycopodium Engineering and Coffey Mining as consultants to start work on plant design and resource definition. Rock phosphate is the raw material for producing fertilisers such as monoammonium phosphate (MAP) and diammonium phosphate (DAP) by adding acid and ammonia. Incitec Pivot is the only producer of MAP and DAP in Australia from its Phosphate Hill project in Queensland. The surge in global fertiliser prices and the prospect of sustained strength on the back of rising food demand in developing economies and the use of fertiliser for biofuels is starting to attract miners worldwide. Rio Tinto is looking to develop a potash project in Argentina and could have had Wonarah in its portfolio.

Engineering board’s future under cloud
Pakistan Dawn – Feb 18, 2008
Exports of heavy engineering goods are practically non-existent. During the last five years the trade deficit is rising primarily because of continuous large-scale import of transport telecom equipment engineering and capital goods. The fact is that major share in overall imports consistently remains that of engineering goods alone plant machinery equipment components and spare parts. The machinery group contributed in the range of 30-42 per cent towards total imports during the years 2001-02 2002-03 and 2003-04. In comparison minerals fuels lubricants and related material (as categorised by the Federal Bureau of Statistics) were at the level of 28 26 and 21 per cent during these years respectively which remained significantly less than the share of capital goods. In succeeding years however the share of machinery group reduced considerably basically due to high oil import prices. ut the total imports of $11.
