We do unit analysis and troubleshoot and systems review. We have the ability to go into a plant and actually make recommendations to the client for most of the systems that operate in that plant. We have the ability to do balance plant engineering; that’s normal A&E engineering architect engineering and engineering. And certainly also our special engineering. We implement our systems. That is we can do a turnkey system installation… We don’t do the fabrication but we will procure that and have that done. We have done that and are doing that on 10 jobs that we have going right now just in North America. We’ve got special systems and engineering design capability. And then a whole group of folks that do our tuning and startup of the systems that we install. If you go to slide eight you look at — you probably asked well why would you want to buy our products and services? Well I will tell you. We have a significant place in the market. The differentiators really are our experience and in-furnace combustion gas mixing is greater than anyone else in the world — any other competitor in the world.

In fact Hauck proudly calls it a “real craft. Hauck knows what he’s talking about. He runs German engineering giant Siemens’ streetcar manufacturing plant in Sacramento. But when the German company showed up in the California capital more than two years ago with its plans to build trams there it found little evidence of craft or even skill. Hauck couldn’t find a single welder with the right skills for the job anywhere in the region. Making meter-long welds across thin sheet metal without the car “bending like a banana” says Hauck takes talent and sensitivity. More important it takes good training.

With plants in 27 countries more new factories under construction and workers speaking languages that include Russian and Turkish Toyota’s top executives are trying a difficult balancing act — replicating the company’s success and operating principles in other countries while ceding more control to these new outposts at the same time. Such thinking represents not just a challenge of reconciling conflicting goals — to control and let go simultaneously — but also a fundamental shift for Toyota where senior management jobs are held entirely by Japanese executives and whose major operations from engineering to design to strategic planning remain based in this city about 200 miles west of Tokyo. “It’s extremely important to have the same common Toyota Way infiltrated to employees in all corners of the world” said Katsuaki Watanabe the company’s president. “But on the other hand in each corner of the world in each region there are inherent characteristics that need to be respected. ”For example Mr. Watanabe has asked foreign managers to assess which tasks they can handle on their own which they can handle with help from Japan and which areas Japanese officials still need to supervise.
