Last year USEC took over the ak Ridge plant that Boeing vacated and is building a series of centrifuges that will be shipped to Piketon hio for use in the American Centrifuge Plant now under construction. USEC’s ak Ridge facility is designing engineering and partially manufacturing 40-foot centrifuges catalysts in a process to create nuclear fuel from uranium hexafluoride gas and its uranium-235 isotope. At its peak the program is expected to employ more than 600 workers in East Tennessee. A year ago USEC said the American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon was estimated to cost $2. 3 billion up from a previous estimate of $1. 7 billion and could further rise.
