Agency ordered to stop sewage overflows into Yough
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette – Pittsburgh Post Gazette – Jan 25, 2008
“We will be following up with a more comprehensive order to deal with the situation in the long term. The authority can appeal the order. Neither Bill McKeever vice president of Senate Engineering the engineering firm employed by the sanitary authority nor John Pecora the treatment plant supervisor could be reached yesterday. Robert Similo authority chairman also could not be reached. The overflows date to at least the summer of 2006 when a fisherman on the Yough reported seeing raw sewage along the river bank near the treatment plant’s discharge pipe. The sanitary authority was ordered to put in a flow meter to measure the untreated sewage but didn’t do so until last August. verflows were measured during the last 10 days of August and on three days in ctober nine days in November and every day in December and January.
New plant may be a power solution
Business Report – Jan 25, 2008
open(new_location win_name win_opts);}. Ipsa an independent power plant developer that is listed on AIM in London and on the JSE’s Altx will build the Coega power plant which can ultimately have a capacity of 1 600MW. The fast-tracking of the project follows the signing yesterday of a memorandum of co-operation between Ipsa and the Central Energy Fund (CEF). Peter Earl Ipsa’s chief executive said yesterday: “This is enough to give Alcan the minimum they need in 2010. This comes after Eskom warned last week that it might not be able supply the Rio Tinto Alcan aluminium smelter with power in 2010 as agreed. Nhlanhla Gumede the deputy director-general of hydrocarbons at the minerals and energy department said initially the Ipsa plant would not be a base load plant which supplies continuous power… PetroSA and iGas are working on these aspects of the project. The Mmamabula power station in Botswana which is planning to sell its power to Eskom is expected to bring on first power two years later than expected in 2013. The Toronto-listed CIC Energy said yesterday the delay in the project was due to constraints on the company’s engineering and contractor resources as well as increased lead times on the delivery of power plant equipment and construction services. Bloomberg reported yesterday that Ipsa posted a record gain after the company said it might expand planned output in South Africa.

The letter states the project could cause "a severe impact on human natural and other needs for the resource above the city limits proper. " Parks Canada staff expressed concern the water intake at the Norland plant is far too shallow for present needs as it was based on a 30-year-old consultant’s report. It is strongly recommended the city look into permanently moving the Norland intake pipe to deeper sections of the Gull River to alleviate any future problems. Mayor McGee asked that an invitation be made to Minister Baird to attend council and provide further information regarding Parks Canada staff concerns.

So you’re talking about fitting 350000 square miles of the desert with Solar power collectors. kee should be done by tomorrow lunch time then. Jeez! That would still class as being the biggest single engineering undertaking probably by a factor of 1000:1!!!!But regardless I’m all for free energy (not that it’ll be free to us) Solar energy r00lz. At least its an option!Hate to rain on anyone’s parade. By Anonymous Coward Posted Friday 25th January 2008 17:11 GMT… By Steve Evans Posted Friday 25th January 2008 17:24 GMT. Am I the only person here who knows what happens to a glass panel when it’s been in a sandblaster?!Even with out that the cleaning bill just to remove the dust after a storm would be terrifying! And of course with 350000 square miles of solar panels to protect you just know some little toe-rag is gonna sneak over at night and nick the copper wire.
