Resolutions for a greener planet
Akron Beacon Journal – Dec 22, 2007
Plant more firs Firs are lovely evergreens with flat needles and most have lovely needles that are lustrous dark green on the upper surface with two bright white lines of stomates (for gas exchange) on lower-needle surfaces. Firs are not generally the most adaptable evergreens for hio and the Midwest because they prefer coolness and not our hot-summer soil and air conditions. From that perspective ongoing global warming somewhat further disqualifies firs as a major landscape plant for hio. Yet there are some wonderful firs that simply must adorn our gardens… His Botany of Desire and mnivore’s Dilemma are already classics of the culture of horticulture and of what we make of our next meal. How to Pick a Peach by Russ Parsons is a book I must finish. The first two chapters are excellent primers on the history of our relationship to what is available in local markets seasonally and how food gets to us from afar and about how new plants are developed through natural traditional and genetic engineering forms of plant breeding. Then the history planting harvesting storage and cooking of everything from apples to winter squash is discussed complete with a number of wonderful recipes I plan to try out this holiday season — starting with mushroom fennel and Parmesan salad. Then when tomato harvest comes around next summer I will try golden tomato-fennel soup. As I said I am fascinated with fennel. Finally I must herald the Return of the Advance of the Fungi.
Aboitiz Vivant to put up power plant in Cebu
sunstar.com.ph – Dec 22, 2007
Last Wednesday Abovant and Global Formosa signed on Wednesday a shareholders’ agreement to form a joint venture company that will develop construct and own the coal-fired power plant. Abovant and Global Formosa will own 44 percent and 56 percent respectively of the joint venture company. The power plant will break ground in 2008 for completion in 2010. The 264-MW plant will meet the increasing demand for power in Cebu that is growing at about nine percent per year. Power generated from the plant which will be located in the island of Cebu will provide the much-needed security to power supply in the province in the coming years. Additional power will be needed with the influx of Business Process utsourcing companies (BPs) and new hotels in the province as well as the presence of large industries in the Toledo-Balamban area. These include Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corporation in Toledo the shipbuilding facility of Tsuneishi Heavy Industries and the modular fabrication facility of Metaphil International in Balamban.
Iceland Seeks to Restore Soils Forests

After drilling a well thousands of feet into the ground engineers let the steam blow out of the well head to measure its pressure and productivity. After that they cap the well head and direct the steam into pipes that carry it down toward the power plant.
Genetically Engineered Plants Increases Carbon Dioxide Intake
MedIndia – Dec 22, 2007
The researchers say that their findings may help deepen the understanding of basic plant biology. They also say that these findings may be critically important in an era of climate change because they may one day allow researchers to genetically engineer plants with increased photosynthetic rates yields and carbon dioxide intake. According to Turgeon’s theory upon accumulation in leaves as a product of photosynthesis sucrose diffuses into the plant’s tube like transport tissue called phloem along with other nutrients to move to other areas of the plant. In the phloem small molecules of sucrose combine to form larger and more complex sugars which become too large to flow back into the leaf.
Mountains of daily garbage prouduce a … Power Stash

5 megawatts of electricity a day. The electricity is sent into Progress Energy lines which distribute more than 21300 megawatts from all sources. The present operation provide enough electricity to power 4000 homes a day said Butch Joyce of Joyce Engineering Inc. which coordinated the work between the authority and Ingenco. “It is set up to allow expansion” said Chuck Packard president and CE of Ingenco. The company has 16 fully operational facilities in North Carolina Virginia Maryland and Pennsylvania. The electricity distribution is managed through a constantly-monitored sophisticated computer grid at the Craven plant… The electricity distribution is managed through a constantly-monitored sophisticated computer grid at the Craven plant. Alan Peterson of Ingenco said the company expects to produce about 140 megawatts of energy daily. The Craven plant will soon produce four megawatts a day and it will produce about six megawatts at full capacity. Some of Ingenco’s plants produce as many as 24 megawatts daily. “We do something very interesting and the public is very supportive” Peterson said. The company has a strong growth model but Peterson did not predict how many other similar facilities it will add to its network. Packard visited the Craven County plant this month for a tour by officials of the three-county area served by the landfill.

The Pune-based two-wheeler major on Friday approved aninvestment of Rs 30 crore through compulsory convertible preference shares toAIG and is also floating Rs 70-crore foreign currency convertible bonds(FCCBs). The issue of both instruments has been proposed at a minimumprice of Rs 156. Company sources said AIG may subscribe to the FCCB issue too. Kinetic Engineering has mandated UK-based KBC Financial Products and KotakMahindra UK as joint lead managers for the FCCB issue… Kinetic Engineering has mandated UK-based KBC Financial Products and KotakMahindra UK as joint lead managers for the FCCB issue. The fundsraised through the preference share issue would be utilised as growth capitalfor working capital and the funds from the bonds would be used for capitalexpenditure requirements for executing orders for gearbox of the TataMotors? much-awaited sub-$3000 small car and other export programmes. Kinetic is also setting up a gearbox plant in Ahmedabad and an assembly line inSingur. With these investments in place Kinetic intends to set up anew gear manufacturing facility to manufacture gears and other powertraincomponents ? engines and transmissions ? to supply to Italy-based MVAgusta motorcycles and other passenger car players. Earlier in theyear the Kinetic Group had announced the completion of its business andfinancial restructuring aimed at tapping opportunities in the auto componentmanufacturing sector. Under this restructuring Kinetic Engineering now focusesexclusively on auto component manufacturing and some of the companies itsupplies include Tata Motors Force Motors and several international companiessuch as MV Augusta Tomos Carraro Visteon GKN Rockford andPiaggio. Auto component manufacturing estimated to touch $33-40billion by 2015 is seen to hold immense opportunity for Indian companies andKinetic Engineering is expected to benefit from its engineering expertise.
