Praj Industries is listed at the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange in India. Under the memorandum Praj Industries will provide assistance and extend its knowledge in identifying varieties of sweet sorghum and jatropha for cultivation trials. Praj “will also provide the design engineering and supply the bio-fuel production plants to potential investors in the biofuel sector based on mutually agreed terms and conditions on a case-to-case basis” the document read. In January President Gloria Arroyo signed into law Republic Act 9367 or the Biofuels Act which aims to ease the country’s addiction to imported dollar-draining and pollution-generating petroleum products. Yap expects the growing global demand for crops-based alternative fuels to energize Philippine farms increase the profitability of small stakeholders in the agriculture sector and reduce the country’s dependence on imported energy sources. The agriculture department is now in the process of identifying for private sector investments more than 400000 hectares of land to plant crops that would be used as feedstock for biofuels production. The lands being processed so far already represent 78 percent of the 600000 hectares targeted for development this year… In January President Gloria Arroyo signed into law Republic Act 9367 or the Biofuels Act which aims to ease the country’s addiction to imported dollar-draining and pollution-generating petroleum products. Brightwater accord on water in dispute
Seattle Times – Oct 6, 2007
At issue is whether King County is expected to construct a backup water system as a preventive measure before it begins underground drilling through the area. The county’s tunneling for piping connected to the Brightwater sewage plant located close to the intersection of highways 9 and 522 immediately north of Woodinville will run over the water district’s aquifer which provides water clean enough not to need chlorinated treatment before being sent to the district’s 860 residential customers. Lake Forest Park Water District officials fear tunneling could permanently damage the aquifer and the water quality its customers have come to expect said Dan Mundall a district engineer. “We expected they would pre-emptively drill us a new well when they initiate construction” Mundall said. “They’re trying a bit now to assault the permanency of the backupwater-supply measures. The agreement calls for either drilling a new well or connecting to Seattle Public Utilities’ water system which is chlorinated. While the second option would provide water to the district’s customers it would not be at the level of service those customers have come to expect Mundall said… ne drill situated near the North Creek Business Park will travel east eventually reaching the plant site about three miles away. Two drills will travel in opposite directions beginning near north Kenmore. Piping to the plant is expected to take about two years to complete Sreibers said. Final preparation for building construction also is under way and King County is still on schedule to have the plant operational by 2010. “There have been some delays in bidding processes but we’re still on schedule” Sreibers said. Domtar Industries Inc. ’s paper mill in Ashdown; Southwestern Electric Power Co. ’s Flint Creek plant near Gentry; Entergy Arkansas’ plants at Redfield and Jones Mill; and Arkansas Electric Cooperative Corp. ’s plants in Augusta and Camden will be subject to the new state regulation. The state regulation complies with the federal Clean Air Act of 1970. The act was amended in 1990 to make visibility in national parks forests and wildlife areas an attribute to be protected and improved said Mike Porta assistant chief of the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality’s Air Division. All facilities that emit more than 250 tons a year of nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxides and that were built between 1962 and 1977 are subject to the new regulation and were evaluated by the Environmental Quality Department Porta said… Not all facilities in the state had an impact on the Caney Creek and upper Buffalo River areas Porta added. Some company representatives reported Thursday that they plan to change how they burn fuel and will make other changes to reduce the amount of pollutants emitted. Kelley Crouch a senior engineer with Domtar said that to comply with the new regulation the company plans to modify some of its equipment at its mill about 50 miles from Caney Creek. Domtar spokesman Max Braswell said Thursday that the mill will have to eat the costs of the emissions modifications which will be a “multimillion-dollar project. ” “A facility like ours doesn’t have the ability really to pass those costs on to anyone else” Braswell said. Stephen Cain senior environmental engineer for Arkansas Electric Cooperative said the regulation requires the utility to reduce the sulfur content of the fuel at its two plants. The larger impact for his company will be making modifications to the plants it co-owns with other energy companies.
