Workers discovered the fibre under insulation pipe lagging about a month ago. Contact chief executive David Baldwin told Radio New Zealand the plant had been built in the 1970s when asbestos use had been widespread. The plant was built by the former New Zealand Electricity Department contracted by the Government which originally requested the plant be asbestos-free. However asbestos had been used and in the 1980s a register was drawn up showing the areas in the plant where asbestos was located. The area it was found in last month was not on the list which meant the company now needed to undertake a large-scale examination of the plant to ensure rogue asbestos was not in other unmarked areas. All 56 employees plus some 20 contractors would undergo full medical screening he said… It’s been an important provider of reserve energy to the system” he said. Mr Baldwin would not rule out going back to the Government to seek compensation or assistance. Engineering Printing and Manufacturing Union Taranaki spokesman Ross Henderson said workers were concerned they could have been exposed to asbestos for years.

When completed this plant will be one of the largest private-owned petrochemical facilities in Singapore. Using natural gas condensate a mixture of the liquids present in the raw natural gas from many natural gas fields as a feedstock the plant will produce 800000 metric tons per annum (MTA) of para-xylene. It will also produce 200000 MTA of ortho-xylene and 450000 MTA of benzene both of which are raw materials that JAC provides to downstream manufacturers of textiles and electronic appliances. The facility will also produce 2.
