07 after the solar-energy company announced its subsidiary Hoku Materials which was established to make polysilicon for the solar-power market entered an engineering services and technology transfer agreement with Dynamic Engineering. According to Hoku the deal calls for Dyanmic to provide design and engineering services as well as a technology license for Hoku Materials to build a trichlorosilane unit at its planned polysilicon plant in Pocatello Idaho the company’s first. Trichlorosilane is a chemical compound of silicon hydrogen and chlorine that is used to make polysilicon. “We expect that our polysilicon production costs will be lower if we produce our own trichlorosilane on site instead of purchasing it from third-party vendors” Hoku Scientific Chief Executive Dustin Shindo said. The plant is of the ISCCS (Integrated Solar Combined Cycle System) type and achieves maximum energy efficiency by combining solar and gas inputs. At night the Kuraymat plant will operate like a convention combined cycle plant burning natural gas to produce some 110 MW of electricity and at midday the use of solar thermal energy will raise its generation capacity to 150 MW. This will give the facility an energy yield of up to 67% which is about 10 points higher than that of the most modern combined cycle units now in operation. Earlier this week the engineering subsidiary of Spain’s IBERDRLA utilities group won a contract to build a 403 MW combined cycle power plant in the Ural region in Russia worth €311 million [US$ 440 million].

Estimates indicate that the Gulf packaging market represents about five percent of the global market size of $500 billion with a growth rate that is much higher than global averages. The establishment of this new packaing facility in the Kingdom will cater more to the local needs. Al-Qurtas said the BPP plant will have the production capacity of 30000 tons per year. Spelling out the salient features of this project Mohammed Al-Laabon Rowad’s general manager said the new company will be named “Rowad International Packaging Co. ” “Rowad has already signed a contract with DMT Technology Holding for 8. 7m wide BPP film production line” Laabon said adding that Rowad will get “full technical support and know-how from DMT… Since its launch in 1985 Tasnee has played a significant role in the Kingdom’s industrial growth participating in a range of national and joint venture projects.
