Commercial Cellulosic Ethanol Plant Underway in Iowa

The company will convert an existing 50 million gallon per year dry-mill ethanol plant in Emmetsburg into an integrated corn-to-ethanol and cellulose-to-ethanol biorefinery. nce operational the facility will produce 125 million gallons of ethanol per year 25 percent of which will be from corn fiber and corn cobs. By adding cellulosic production to an existing grain ethanol plant PET says the company will be able to produce 11 percent more ethanol from a bushel of corn 27 percent more from an acre of corn while almost completely eliminating fossil fuel consumption and decreasing water usage by 24 percent. The agreement between PET and the DE finalizes the first phase of an $80 million federal government award that was announced in February. With the agreement in place PET will move forward on project preliminary design and engineering environmental engineering biomass collection and other activities that will take two years overall. Then a two year construction phase is scheduled with facility operation expected in 2011. Leighton has been issued with a Notice of Intent to undertake the design and construction of the process plant and selected infrastructure on a Fixed Price Lump Sum ("FPLS") contractual basis. Power The optimisation assumes that power will be provided by coal fired power station on Masbate Island. The main benefit of coal generation is the non reliance on fuel and the vagaries of the international fuel price and reduced operating costs. This is planned to be financed and operated by a third party.

"Plants rely on a complex set of bioactive volatile chemicals which diffuse easily through the membranes of cells that produce them to communicate and interact with the outside world. These often aromatic and highly specialized compounds entice pollinators fend off pathogens bacteria and leaf-munching animals alike… " Understanding the biosynthetic pathways used by plants to make all of these secondary metabolites may help the Noel-Pichersky research team and others to improve the flavor and nutritional quality of plants that are part of our diet. Being able to tinker with natural scents could resurrect the waning scent of roses or create novel fragrances for the perfume industry. But scent engineering has the potential to do more than just pleasing human noses. It could increase crop yields by enticing new pollinators or natural pest controllers such as parasitic wasps to visit commercially grown plants.
