Ethanol plant proposed for Quonset
Providence Journal – Oct 22, 2007
Three partners including former talk-show host Arlene Violet are proposing a $135-million plant that would turn corn brought in by rail into ethanol that would be transported by barge to gasoline mixing plants in Providence and other East Coast ports. But it’s not a done deal yet. The plan for an industrial plant which won unanimous preliminary approval by the board that governs Quonset came as a bit of a surprise because the last three developments there — a yacht repair and storage yard an office and retail complex at the gateway to the park and an expansion of a car-import business at the Port of Davisville — have been cleaner quieter businesses and not very invasive to the Bay and nearby communities. ne of the reasons the development has moved in that direction is that nearby South County residents have gained a bigger voice in what happens at Quonset. Remember all the complaints about the big-box retail stores and traffic at the Gateway project that was redesigned without Lowe’s and Kohl’s? Local opponents to a deep-water cargo container port lined up enough political support including Governor Carcieri to kill the idea. The locals seemed to like the idea of a mega yacht marina which fits their vision of a business park in South County. The preliminary approval by the Quonset board to site the ethanol plant on 25 acres allows the developers to seek permits from other boards and agencies including the Quonset Development Corporation’s design and technical review committee the Coastal Resources Management Council the Department of Environmental Management and the state Planning Council… Remember all the complaints about the big-box retail stores and traffic at the Gateway project that was redesigned without Lowe’s and Kohl’s? The project may not provoke the outcry that other plans for Quonset have. The plant would be tucked into a corner of the park near other industrial facilities such as Electric Boat and the SENESC barge company. That’s far away from the gateway project and the Davisville pier area. The developers plan to use rail to bring the corn in and not flood the roads with trucks.
