Jane Fonda – Nuclear Energy – The China Syndrome – Three Mile Island …
New York Times – Sep 16, 2007
But should it?In the movie “The China Syndrome” Fonda played a California TV reporter filming an upbeat series about the state’s energy future. While visiting a nuclear power plant she sees the engineers suddenly panic over what is later called a “swift containment of a potentially costly event. ” When the plant’s corporate owner tries to cover up the accident Fonda’s character persuades one engineer to blow the whistle on the possibility of a meltdown that could “render an area the size of Pennsylvania permanently uninhabitable. ” “The China Syndrome” opened on March 16 1979. With the no-nukes protest movement in full swing the movie was attacked by the nuclear industry as an irresponsible act of leftist fear-mongering. Twelve days later an accident occurred at the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in south-central Pennsylvania.

Now NACA is proceeding. For instance the regular monthly NACA meeting usually held on the third Thursday will be on the fourth Thursday this month for good reason. ” That (schedule change ) was to accommodate our bond underwriter and our engineers who should have everything ready to present to the board at that meeting in order to proceed with marketing the bonds having the financing in place getting the bonds marketed in ctober and then authorizing final design of the engineering just moving forward with that ” Sampier said. ” Then we intend to break ground on the facility in mid-2008 and be in operations in the first quarter of 2010. It’s proceeding behind the scenes. ” Many cities are in a position to benefit from the facility though it’s not clear in every case exactly how a city will relate to NACA or in the long run how many cities ultimately will participate in the authority. In any case NACA will try to be of assistance Sampier said… In essence that’s what would happen because our sewer rates are already in the top 8 percent in the state. And this would nearly triple them. ” Centerton tried to build a city sewer plant but could not get approval from the state. Centerton is now studying to determine the costs it would incur if the city signed on with NACA’s plan. Sampier is aware that Centerton is taking a hard look at the numbers. ” Centerton is going to continue to look at the numbers to see what is in their best interest whether it’s to continue to be treated indirectly by NACA as a customer of Bentonville or if they opt to sign their own contract and have their own transmission line to the NACA facility ” he said. While cities and other entities are figuring out how best they should proceed no one should underestimate the significance of the facility and of NACA’s commitment to helping people in the area said state Sen.
