Richard Graham Early EEC Teacher Corps Leader
Washington Post – Sep 29, 2007
“Richard Alton Graham was born in Milwaukee on Nov. He was a 1942 mechanical engineering graduate of Cornell University. He received a master’s degree in education from Catholic University in 1970 and a doctorate in philosophy in 1972 from what is now the Union Institute & University in Cincinnati. During World War II he served in the Army Air Forces and used his engineering background to develop guided missiles. Afterward he worked with his father in Milwaukee to build and sell a variable-speed drive transmission that is used in many industrial settings. He developed hepatitis while skiing in Aspen Colo… Graham denounced companies that excluded mothers from management training programs saying that women who have borne children have proved to be “the most stable workers in the labor market. “He also noted that “misplaced chivalry” prohibited some managers from hiring women in labor-intensive parts of a company plant or in questionable sections of a town. He later told a Newsday reporter “Women in a tire plant were losing their high-paying jobs to kids because the plant manager and the bargaining agent agreed these weren’t jobs for women. [They would say] ‘I wouldn’t want my wife to do work like this. ‘ “ne of the commission’s best-known decisions at the time was its refusal to end the common practice among newspapers of sexually segregating classified advertisements for jobs. Graham and Hernandez were the sole dissenters on the vote and both went on to serve as founding officers with NW.

spewing plumes of dust over the Irish Sea to “oohs” and “ahs” from onlookers. Calder Hall officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1956 produced weapons-grade plutonium while also feeding energy into Britain’s national grid. The opening was hailed as an “epoch-making” event and praised as an example of Britain’s engineering prowess reports the BBC News. “This new power which has proved itself to be such a terrifying weapon of destruction is harnessed for the first time for the common good of our community” said the Queen in during the plant’s inauguration according to the BBC. Although smaller research reactors had been used previously to generate electricity Calder Hall was the first plant to generate commercial quantities of electricity. The inauguration of the plant was a big enough event that some children were given the day off of school reports the BBC. Marjorie Taylor told the BBC that she was at Calder Hall with thousands of onlookers awaiting the Queen’s arrival and still has the invitation. Interviewed in 2006 she said: “We stood for hours. ne woman near us collapsed because she had been so excited to see the Queen that she had left home very early without eating anything. We found a camp chair and a sandwich for her.

“We can’t authorize use of the landfill. The city has filed a request to open a temporary leachate storage tank system that would collect the juices which would be pumped into trucks and hauled in 7000 gallon batches to the Greenwood Wastewater Treatment Plant about eight miles away. The plant is expected to generate between 8000 to 10000 gallons of leachate a day. Richard Carmichael the state’s municipal solid waste permit section manager said they’ll notify the city early next week if they may open using the temporary storage plan. If approved they can operate that way for 180 days and apply for a second 180-day approval. Clewis said the state is expediting paperwork and the review process because of the capacity issue. Meanwhile the city is working on submitting permit modification paperwork to detail the design and construction of the leachate ponds… City officials said building storage tanks would be too costly and decided to go with leachate ponds several years ago but didn’t get it changed in the permit. “We’re filling out some extra paperwork” said Kevin Stowers a city engineer monitoring the project. utside consultants HDR Engineering did permitting and design work. The firm is handling the permit modification paperwork at no extra cost to the city Stowers said. The city’s permit for the new landfill was approved in 1999. Kaplan said there have been numerous changes in department leadership and consultants since then. “With an anticipated project of this scope you’re going to have some issues” he said.

Your Ecological House: Arbor makes home more comfortable
San Francisco Chronicle – Sep 29, 2007
Skimpy lattices will warp in the hot sun or sag under the weight of water-filled vines and leaves which get heavier each year as the cover plant grows. Metal connectors are recommended at critical joints. The drawings accompanying this article give general structural recommendations but a licensed design professional such as a landscape architect or structural engineer should be consulted before a large heavy shade structure is built near your house. Your choice of wood is critical for the environment. “Pressure treated” (PT) lumber is ordinary softwood vulnerable to dry-rot in the ground and at joints where water collects but protected by anti-fungal poisons driven under pressure into hundreds of perforations in its surface. While PT is intended for outdoor use the poison can leach out over time so you don’t want PT around kids pets or food plants. PT can be painted to seal the poison in but painted PT is ugly and the paint eventually flakes off… ) Treat the posts twice before sinking them into the ground making sure the end grain which wicks ground water is completely sealed. Reapply oil annually or when the wood looks dry. The ideal cover plant is a deciduous vine providing shade in summer and dropping its leaves in winter to allow the sun to warm your house. Clematis trumpet vines and wisteria work well. Grapes are deciduous and provide food but can be poisonous to dogs and make a mess on your patio. Large vines should be planted in the ground not in planters. Ground plants will set better roots require far less water and be hardier.

Retirees celebrate role in getting Gulfstream off ground
Savannah Morning News – Sep 29, 2007
It decided in the mid-1960s to relocate its corporate-jet operation at Travis Field and Murphy and Bauer were among the earliest arrivals – but only because they wanted to be. “We didn’t have to make the move” remembered Murphy a 72-year-old Marine Corps veteran who looks much younger than his years. Grumman had told him and other prospective transfers to visit Savannah look around for a week and decide if they wanted to be part of the ambitious expansion effort. Murphy and his wife Carol came down and liked Savannah so much that they stayed an extra week. They told Grumman they’d make the move and it’s a decision they’ve never regretted… 1959: Grumman unveils the turboprop-driven Gulfstream I the world’s first business plane. 1966: Grumman introduces the Gulfstream II a business jet that could fly faster than commercial jets. 1967: Grumman opens a Savannah plant to manufacture Gulfstream IIs. In its first year Savannah’s 100-man work force produced 12 GS IIs. 1978: Allen Paulson buys the Gulfstream operation from Grumman for $52 million and forms Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. 1980: Delivery of the Gulfstream III begins. 1981: Gulfstream expands its operations acquiring a plant in klahoma City.
