The history of Chicago’s project also is tangled by the city’s old-school insider politics. Records show extensive ties between the sanitary district superintendent who championed the Black Box and the MBM executive in charge of building it today. The showcase plant is now nearly four years behind schedule. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago plans to levy more than $1 million in late charges against MBM. In 2004 top district officials tried unsuccessfully to end the deal because of construction delays and permit disputes. District officials say the past problems have no bearing on the project’s prospects and add that some of the delays came because they are closely monitoring MBM’s work. The firm was created by former district General Supt.

First I’d like to take some time talking about our communications business. Historically we have been a maintenance contractor for the telecommunications industry. Today we perform outside plant engineering and outside plant construction for them. We also do a lot of work in the central office both maintaining equipment and installing new equipment. That has been a very solid base of business for us over the years. There is no question that over the course of the last few years and looking into the future our main customers are pushing fiber deeper into their networks. We expect fiber to continue to grow as a percentage of the plant that our customers deploy and we have been very active in that type of work.
Investment bankers line up for desal plant
The Australian – Sep 20, 2007
As revealed in The Australian yesterday the Victorian Government will use a public private partnership model to build the $3. The 150 gigalitre desalination plant is part of a $4. 9 billion water reform package by the Victorian Government to drought-proof Melbourne. The state Government also wants to overhaul the metropolitan retail water sector which could result in the introduction of the private sector into the water retail business. Under the current structure three retail businesses operate Victoria’s water. The Victorian Government has appointed the Victorian Competition and Efficiency Commission to review the current structure… Mr Brumby said bids received in response to the proposals would be tested against the Government’s quantitative benchmark the Public Sector Comparator and also would be required to meet public interest tests. For a project of this size and complexity each consortium will spend at least $10 million on each proposal. The five consortiums are expected to include: John Holland and Veolia Water; Thiess Contractors and French-based water treatment company Degremont; Leighton Contractors and General Electric United Utilities Australia a subsidiary of Britain’s largest water company Abigroup and McConnell Dowell Corporation; and the fifth consortium is expected to be headed by Infilco Degremont which is part of the Degremont Group the world’s leading water treatment engineering company. ABN AMR executive director of structured finance Geoff Daley said the investment bank was talking to various participants to try to get a role. ABN AMR was involved in the financing of $6 billion of the $8 billion PPPs last year. module-content –>.
