Recall that we received our permit to expand TXI’s Central Texas cement plant last February. Further recall that we said at the time that we expected the increase in annual cement capacity to be about 1 million tons. As we have progressed in our detailed engineering and design work we have determined that we can increase the size of the expansion from 1 million tons to 1. 4 million tons and that is what we plan to do. With the positive long-term outlook for construction activity in Texas we want to add as much cement production as possible to the plant. We currently expect that the new kiln line will start production before the end of calendar year 2009 about 2… We currently expect that the new kiln line will start production before the end of calendar year 2009 about 2. With regard to our California cement plant modernization and expansion the project continues on time and on budget. This project will increase annual cement capacity at the plant by 1 million tons and also replace older inefficient capacity with state-of-the-art production equipment that will be much more efficient. Most of you have heard me say many times that we expect the minimal incremental EBIT benefit from this project to be at least $60 million or in EBITDA terms at least $75 million. The new plant is scheduled to start production late fall or early winter of this year. Using the commissioning experience from a similar project at our North Texas plant in 2001 the commissioning of the new facility should take about six months.

Some SPEEA members and retirees cheered the board’s action. “It’s 20 years too late but he finally got what he deserved” said Gary Carter a retiree who worked as a manufacturing engineer for 35 years in Everett. “A bunch of us who are former Boeing employees would stand and hoot and holler and hope he doesn’t get a cent from SPEEA once they’ve canned him.
