According to terms of the agreement signed in April the two Chinese contractors will help the Saudi company Western Way for Industrial Development Co. obtain funds equivalent to half of the project costs from Chinese policy banks the China Securities Journal said. The China Nonferrous Metal Industries Foreign Engineering and Construction Co (NFC) will build an alumina plant and an electrolytic aluminium plant in the southeastern Saudi city of Jazan the report said. China National Machinery Industry Corp will construct a dock and a power plant supporting the plants it added. No other details on the Saudi company were provided. The alumina plant will have annual output of 1. 6 million tonnes while the capacity of the electrolytic aluminium plant will be 660000 to 700000 tonnes.
PSEB Engineer’s body concerned on security of Ropar thermal plant
PunjabNewsline.com – May 26, 2007
The engineers apprised Secretary PSEB about the increased incidences of thefts at various locations in the plant and suggested that present security arrangements by PESC should be replaced by central agency like CISF. SSP Ropar in a letter to Chief Engineer of the thermal plant had earlier asked to take necessary steps as the security of sensitive industrial unit falls under category “A” and asked to take necessary steps in this direction. Even earlier DGP Vigilance of PSEB had asked the PSEB authorities to tighten the security and recommended shifting of Jhuggies outside the plant. The contract workers living in the Jhuggies inside the prestigious Thermal Plant Ropar poses a serious security threat to the plant as they enter and leave the plant without any check. PSEB haS constructed Jhuggies outside the main plant for the contract workers at a cost of 18 lakhs but the workers are not shifting these jhuggies on one pretext or other and the administration is watching the situation helplessly. The last dead line for shifting expired on March 15.
MMS Mag : SAM ‘” just another three letter acronym? : Manufacturing…
MMS Magazine – May 26, 2007
Notice that I am avoiding correlating successful SAM with cost reduction. A business strategy may for example be to maximise short term production to gain market share and for this business strategy to succeed significant costs may need to be incurred. As a young engineer I was required to design equipment for chemical processing plants. This design basis was a prerequisite for the detailed design which included capacity materials of construction operational and safety aspects maintenance procedures etc. Following the specification of the equipment the datasheets were handed over to procurement to source the equipment ensure delivery to the construction site and manage the significant and often complex commercial contracts and warranties from the manufacturer. Following installation of the equipment the plant was commissioned and the first year was typically spent developing operational experience to achieve design capacity and product quality requirements… Following the specification of the equipment the datasheets were handed over to procurement to source the equipment ensure delivery to the construction site and manage the significant and often complex commercial contracts and warranties from the manufacturer. Following installation of the equipment the plant was commissioned and the first year was typically spent developing operational experience to achieve design capacity and product quality requirements. SAM at that stage was all about engineering the plant quickly delivering a successful construction project and handing over to operations. During this phase the business strategy was in all probability to enter into a market with the product as quickly as possible. The emphasis was on investment the integrity of the design the speed of the construction and commissioning phases and achieving the optimum throughput at lowest cost per unit production. SAM was all about utilising existing plant and processes to produce quality product quickly in response to real customer orders. nce the plant was operating engineers would instantly recognise the many opportunities to increase capacity and reduce production costs.
Sandvik expands Design & Development Center in Pune
Machinist.in – May 26, 2007
The center now spread over 28500sq. (twenty eight thousand five hundred square feet) will enable Sandvik to provide enhanced engineering capacity for bulk handling machines and for plant contracts undertaken in India. Hakan Kingstedt Managing Director & President Sandvik Asia Limited speaking on the occasion said: “This expansion is in line with our strategy to strengthen our Asian platform while riding the rapid growth in the country. The continuous expansion of Sandvik’s engineering capacity and related building infrastructure in India demonstrates the confidence of company’s global project team in the ability of the Indian subsidiary to consistently deliver high quality engineering solution and services… The expanded centre is now fully equipped to undertake diverse activities including concept design basic design detail engineering structural calculations and design 3-D modeling electrical engineering and design of control and automation related to machines and projects of bulk materials handling while generating 250000 (two hundred fifty thousand) engineering hours annually. The design and development centers located in India also cater to engineering needs for Sandvik Group projects worldwide. Sandvik Asia Limited has design and development centers in Pune Bangalore Kolkata and Delhi in India. Last Updated ( Monday 28 January 2008 ) Related news.
Tupelo museum scrutinizes move to Carnation plant
Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal – May 26, 2007
By Emily Le CozDaily JournalTUPEL – ren Dunn Museum officials will have spent more than $13000 by mid-summer to study the feasibility of moving their collection into the former Carnation Milk plant. The results could determine whether or not the museum moves to the old Mill Village structure near downtown as originally planned. fficials spent about $7500 this month to The Design Minds a museum consulting firm from Alexandria Va. whose representatives visited the Carnation building May 10-11. “They did a feasibility study from the museum’s standpoint of whether or not a museum will work at that building” said ren Dunn director Jeni Skolaris. “They discussed everything with the board and did a mock-up of building and they said anything is possible if you can raise the money. “Although the consultants’ report is not due until late June Skolaris said the group initially gave the building a thumbs-up… “We don’t want to get into building and then five years later have the ceiling fall in on us. “Museum and city officials approved plans late last year to move the collection of Tupelo’s history from its current location inside a cramped barn at Ballard Park to the abandoned Carnation plant downtown. The plant has 36330 square feet and would allow the museum to grow and enhance its offerings. It will cost an estimated $2. 8 million to renovate the former milk plant and $3. 6 million for a proposed addition to the building according to JBHM architects which helped sketch out some ideas for the museum. Although the decision to move there has been made Skolaris and others said the result of both the structural integrity and the museum consultant reports will determine the final outcome.
Worm-slicers and fly-squashers
Telegraph.co.uk – May 26, 2007
In A Guinea Pig’s History of Biology “the ideas of science come second in every sense to the work of science”. It begins with the Passiflora gracilis: the passion flower. This beautiful South American plant originally appealed to the Catholic European invaders who discovered it because they thought it bore the symbols of their faith. The species first drawn to the church’s attention was pictured with 72 filaments (the traditional number of thorns on Christ’s crown) five stamens (representing Christ’s scourges) five blood red spots (for the five wounds) and three carpels for the Trinity. Charles I was sometimes referred to as “the passion flower”. John Tradescant the king’s head gardener after the Restoration cultivated the plant and its popularity spread across England. Eventually they crept into the greenhouse of Charles Darwin who realised that their “crafty and sagacious” tendril-bearing was an evolutionary response to their environment… They had already suffered at the hands of humans – Andeans used to rub them on the affected parts of ill people before sacrificing them. The fascinating cultural back-story included in the book makes it hard to follow the scientific sections. This is especially true as we move into genetic engineering and mice implanted with cancer-causing genes. Having shown all the mistakes worm-slicers have made it’s no surprise when Endersby concludes by advising that we keep our consciences under the microscope. “Next time the headlines proclaim a new cause or cure for cancer homosexuality or any other human phenomenon check whether the research in question was done using fish flies or flowers.
