The city is home to LG Electronics’ second Indian plant where young Indian workers churn out cell phones and TVs helping the company secure a major share of the market. The palpable eagerness of the Indian employees reminded me of the way Koreans worked in the 1970s and 1980s when our economy was booming. Not far from the LG plant are several more factories including ones operated by Tata India’s largest car maker and Whirlpool and Panasonic. But a factory next to the LG plant caught my attention. The white letters spelling out Daewoo and Daewoo Spirit contrasted vividly against the blue background of the signboard… They’re in a rush to buy up good companies to acquire advanced technologies and top brands. Daewoo dared to pioneer overseas markets its spirit bolstered by the rising tide of globalization but its failure has come back to haunt Korean companies abroad. This is why I¡¯m concerned about the sale of the world¡¯s second-largest shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and Daewoo Electronics which has over 10000 technology patents. The cost of our failure to protect good Korean companies is huge even though we see it coming. I’m no nationalist but what if the Korean financial institutions that bailed out our struggling domestic companies with public funds proceed to sell them on to foreigners? The thought of our foreign rivals securing an advantage pains me. The column was contributed by Lee In-yul the Chosun Ilbo’s correspondent in New Delhi.
